ABOUT HDPA

The Houston Dog Park Association is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization founded in 1998. The purpose of HDPA is establishing and supporting a network of off-leash dog parks in greater Houston and the surrounding communities.

Texas Comptrollers Certification of Account Status

HDPA was the catalyst responsible for getting the City and Counties to build dog parks. HDPA takes pride in the effort put forth by volunteers to help Harris County Precinct 3 design and gather support for the very first dog park in Houston, award winning Millie Bush Bark Park. Whenthe City of Houston Parks Dept. and other cities and counties saw the huge success of Commissioner Radack's award winning Millie Bush bark Park, dog parks began popping up all over town. The City of Houston issued a press release in 2004 announcing it's first dog park plans, read it here.

HDPA is not involved in the support or planning of all new dog parks but it is our goal is to help advise during the planning of future dog parks in order to help the cities and counties around Greater Houston that build them to make successful and safe dog parks. We would also like to help them avoid some of the common pitfalls that occur when designing, constructing and opening a new dog park. If you would like HDPA to work with you to ensure the success of your dog park please contact us. We are happy to help!

To that end, HDPA has worked over the years to raise public awareness of the benefits and appropriate use of dog parks. While it has no jurisdiction over the dog parks, HDPA has been instrumental in helping Houston become a nationally recognized dog-friendly city. Going forward HDPA is becoming more active in the planning and advocacy for more dog parks all over Houston. HDPA is also working to partner with and support animal welfare organizations. In this way HDPA is also keeping to it's mission of educating about responsible dog ownership.

Now that Houstonians have embraced the concept of dog parks and those dog parks have been recognized and awarded as the best dog parks in the country (with more to come), HDPA also acts as a community liason and advocate for existing dog parks, to help resolve issues and concerns at the various dog parks by maintaining a strong partnership with city and county parks department officials. HDPA's MISSION:

HDPA is dedicated to educating all people as to the responsibilities and benefits of pet ownership and supporting the development of off-leash dog parks as environmentally compatible areas for enjoyment and recreation.

~~~~~~
Through your donations, the HDPA is able to continue our educational, advisory, and support efforts at local dog-related events and on our web site. HDPA will also use donations to fund dog parks, improve dog parks, and support our operations. While your financial contribution is important to us, your volunteer efforts as “a working member” are invaluable. Join us and help your dog have the time of its life.
We have a great team started and need a few good dedicated dog park lovers! If you would like to interview for a Board position or Committee Chair position that is open, please email info@houstondogpark.org
