EDUCATION

HDPA is an educational organization as well as an advocate for dog parks.

Establishing dog parks may seem a non-traditional way of promoting canine health and safety. However, in a major metropolitan area such as Houston, it is critical that dogs have a place where they can run off their leashes. Many dogs reside in apartments or townhomes without adequate yard space for necessary exercise. Owners may take dogs for walks but most Houston city streets do not have sidewalks on which to walk the dogs. Thus, both dog and owner must avoid traffic. And, drivers must also avoid the dogs and owners. Further, Houston has a fairly high crime rate. Arguably, it is much safer for a handler to take a dog to a dog park than walk Houston's streets alone at night. By providing a safe place for dogs to run, HDPA also provides safety to dog owners.

Top Ten Tips for Responsible Pet Ownership

1. Think carefully before getting a pet and learn about
its special requirements.

2. Ensure your pet is sociable and well trained.

3. Provide a nutritious diet.

4. Provide your pet with suitable shelter from inclimate weather.

5. Clean up after your pet.

6. Provide proper veterinary care and vaccinations for your pet.

7. Prevent unwanted litters, spay or neuter your pet if you are not a licensed breeder.

8. Groom and exercise your pet regularly.

9. Control your pet and ensure it is properly identified.

10. Get your pet licensed.
