Dog Park Coming To 1960/Willowbrook area!

The Houston Dog Park Association (HDPA) is proud to be partnering with sponsor Barks 5th Avenue, a pet care facility on 1960 near Jones Rd, to bring a public dog park to NW Houston. Public land next to the Barks 5th Avenue facility might be used by HDPA to build a public dog park on. HDPA would also manage the dog park. Dog park land donations are tax deductible. The plan is in preliminary stages now and more details will be shared at the Kick Off and Fund Raising event to be held October 2nd in the parking lot of Barks 5th Avenue at 10620 FM 1960 West, Houston, TX 77070. Funds raised will be used for a northwest area dog park in the general area.

We will be announcing the event details on our web site soon but you can mark your calendar for Oct. 2nd now. Leashed pets will be invited to the event and we'll have lots of fun for people and doggies including a dog and car wash, frisbee dog demonstrations, doggie costume contest, and lots of local vendor tables with freebies and goodies to give away and win. We are seeking vendors and will also need volunteers to help setup and work at the event from washing cars and dogs to entertainment and set up/clean up. Email kristen@barks5thave.com to get on the event list. You can donate to the NW area dog park construction fund right now via Paypal or you can donate at the event. HDPA has already raised over $1000 for the NW area dog park. HDPA will be forming a "Friends of the NW Area Dog Park Committee" to help us plan and develop this new dog park. If you'd like to help us make this dream a reality for NW Houston dog owners email tiffany@houstondogpark.org to learn how you can help. HDPA is a 501c3 non-profit volunteer organization that advocates for dog parks and supports dog park patrons through education. Read the Chronicle article about this project.

New Dog Park Coming to Downtown!

A Downtown dog park is in development in Market Square. Construction is in progress right now. It is in the block bordered by Travis, Preston, Congress and Milam in far north downtown. See the plan drawing here. The fenced dog "run" area is the brown crescent shape. Not real large, but looks to be pretty decent sized and a very well designed upscale dog park. possibly even has a water feature it appears! HDPA will be involved with the Grand Opening event so watch our Events page, Facebook Page, or HDPA Newsletter for that announcement

February

HDPA enjoyed educating the community in Precinct 2 about responsible dog ownership and dog park rules and etiquette at the Grand Opening of the Gene Green Dog Park at 6500 E. Sam Houston Beltway N. (at Hwy 90). Both the dog park and the human park are quite amazing. The dog park has trees and a brushy area which is rare in dog parks. The park for people is truly a site to behold as well. There is a fun zip line for kids to ride on anda futuristic playground. There is also a splash pad, skate park, miles of walking trails and an amphitheater. Wow! Thanks to HC Pct 2 for giving their constituents this great new amenity!

See videos of the event here.

The Houston Dog Park Association was a guest at the Grand Opening of the Tanglewood Dog Park in River Oaks to educate the attendees about proper dog park etiquette and the rules of the park. HDPA volunteers were advocating for and supporting all the dog parks in Houston through education efforts. Mayor Annise Parker was there too and she gave HDPA her support via her signature on a petition, and her blessing to go forth and support Houston's dog parks!

Rennovations for TC Jester Park

from http://www.houstontx.gov/parks/index.html

"T.C. Jester Park is undergoing renovation. The parking lot and swimming pool area will be closed during the reconstruction process, with reopening expected in mid-July 2010. The scope of the project will include pool renovation, new pool deck and sprayground, demolition of the diving board and wading pool, a new entry canopy, renovated restroom facilities, expanded parking, landscaping and irrigation, and construction of an amphitheater. The trail in the park will remain open through most of this process, with short interruptions north of the pool."

New Dog Park coming to Gragg Park

BARC ... plans to construct a new facility, to be named the Ann Young Animal Center, including an adoption program, a veterinary clinic and a dog park in Gragg Park, 2999 South Wayside at Wheeler. This facility will be made possible in large part by the generous bequest left to BARC by Ann Slemons Young, who died in 2007. Her dream was for BARC to have a state-of-the-art adoption facility to enhance the ability to find homes for the 25,000+ dogs and cats brought to BARC each year. The preliminary plans call for a 30,000-square-foot building and the dog park on a 5.5 acre tract across the road from the Houston Parks and Recreation Department offices. More details about this proposal can be found here with a plan drawing.

Donate via the link to help build the dog park and Animal Adoption Center.

WANT A DOG PARK NEAR YOU? HERE'S HOW!
Harris County is asking us to forward this survey about their Harris County Park Master Plan. Please take the time to fill it out and also forward it to your friends and family. They are primarily looking for persons living in Harris County. In the questioning, it asks if you would like to have a Dog Park at your favorite County Park and how often do you use dog parks, and which dog park you visit, etc. We don't know the deadline so do it now and tell every dog owner you know to also fill it out asap, and ASK FOR MORE DOG PARKS! Let it be heard how much Houston wants more dog parks. Help us get 500 people to fill out the survey in favor of dog parks.

Hermann Dog Park latest news from Rick Dewees of HPARD "The concept of a dog park in Hermann Park is still on the radar but, because of other funding priorities for Hermann Park Conservancy, has not had much movement. They are in the process of completing construction on the new Lake Plaza and beginning design for the renovation of the Garden Center. . . two very large initiatives. It would possibly move up the priority list if there were a funding source or plan identified. We haven’t heard a single negative comment about the concept but the Conservancy has a commitment and history of doing things right . . sometimes meaning expensive. I believe that it is a good idea that’s time will come. "

When it re-bids we will be able to provide an accurate picture of what will be contained within the off-leash area. The project should break ground this summer. "

Update about closing of Danny Jackson Park from Mike McMahan of Pct. 3:

"Metro has not at this time [10/22/07] given us a time or date when or if they're going to reclaim the property {Danny Jackson dog park}. They haven't notified us that this is happening. They haven't notified us that they want to end the lease. We know it's a possibility it could happen at any time, but as of now we've not been notified of a date. As of right now, we do not have a piece of real estate that could be used as a dog park in that area [if Danny Jackson is reclaimed]."
