New Westpark
Dog Park opening very soon!
July 21, 2005 - from a source:
A new dog park is under construction in the Westpark area, south of
59, inside the loop, on Loop Central Drive. We have a report from a
dog park lover who works across the steet: He says the swimming pond
is cemented in already (yay!), and they are working diligently everyday,
even in the rain!
We think it may be open in a couple months, but we do not know the official
opening date.
Aug 3 - update:
All grading and drainage appears to be finished
Trees have been planted
Some areas have been seeded for grass
The entrance gates are almost complete, however the perimeter fencing
has not yet been started
Pond appears complete but not filled with water as of yet
Could be open very soon! SEE PHOTOS
of progress.

a new Bellaire area park
(May 11, 2005)
"...saw
in the Southwest News (a local paper) that Commissioner Radak is opening
a dog park which will be located near Westpark, 610 and Newcastle inside
the Loop, south of 59 in or near the METRO easement. .... not sure exactly
where this is, but part of the dog park agreement is with CenterPoint
to use their property under the powerlines for parking. All I know from
the article is that the park would have a pond and equipment. "

U dog park rivals rip city's plan
Houston Chron, May 11 2005 (archived)
April 22, 2005
The Houston Dog Park Association is thrilled to announce that Precinct
3's Millie Bush Bark Park has been named the NUMBER ONE Dog Park in
the nation by Novartis and Dog Fancy Magazine!!! Thank you to those
that sent in a nomination. The results of the "top 10" contest
will be run in the June issue of Dog Fancy. Sadly, due to legal reasons,
Precinct 3 was unable to accept the official $10,000.00 grant money as
an award. However the precinct will be able to accept a "prize"
check for $2,500.00 which the precinct says it will use on upgrading Millie
Bush Park.
HPDA is proud to have been a part of Millie Bush's creation and we look
forward to the opening of many, many more dog parks in the Houston area.
This award winning Harris County Precinct #3 "Dog Park Dynamo"
team plans to build two more dog parks in their precinct, and word is
the Bear Creek Park may be even better than Millie Bush, we can't wait
to see it!
Read about it in the upcoming June issue of Dog Fancy or
on their web site (in late May and June)

What’s
new at your area dog park?
Millie
Bush Bark Park-
Nov. 2004 -Beautiful improvements have been made to all ponds. A new walk
path has been added on the outside of the fenced area. Three newly installed
shade covers and benches are a welcomed addition, allowing relief from
the Texas heat, until the many trees existing in the park have time to
mature into nice shade trees.
Special
Note: Your Dog's Safety
There have been some reports of injury to some dog’s pads at the
park. Particularly if you have dogs that, for the most part, walk on carpet
or lush lawns and may have softer pads than those used to rougher surfaces,
please check your dog’s feet often to check for abrasions. Materials
used at the dog parks that can hold up to the usage by the dogs such as
Decomposed Granite, Stabilized Sand, and even dried muddy areas can create
a rough surface which your dogs pads may not be conditioned for. Dog’s
pads are often inspected during some dog sports trials such as the AD
test (endurance runs for dogs along a bicycle rider) or sheep herding
trials or sled dog races. While your dog need not be a conditioned athlete
to visit the dog park, it is advised to check your dog’s running
gear from time to time.
Maxey Bark
and Run- The large back section and the right side section of Maxey Park
are now designated as Maxey Bark and Run Dog Park, and is to be used as
a dog park only, where dogs are allowed to run off leash. The front left
section of Maxey Park is now to be used as a general park use area. If
you take your dog into the front left section please know your dog needs
to be on leash while in that area, just as in any other city park.

March 2005 -
The 24th Annual Houston Humane Society K-9 Fun Run on March 20th was a
great success. The winner of the Teddy Bear raffle is Pat Whitely, who
donated it back to HDPA and asked us to give it to a children's cause
of our choice. HDPA will donate the teddy bear to Child Protective Services,
CPS will put it in their "Bear Room" and children in foster
homes and
involved with CPS will get to play with it. Thanks Pat!
